What is a GST Tax Invoice?
A GST Tax Invoice is a document issued by a GST-registered business when selling goods or services. It is mandatory under the Goods and Services Tax Act and must include the seller's GSTIN, buyer details, HSN or SAC codes for each item, applicable GST rates, and the total tax amount broken down by CGST, SGST, or IGST.
Freelancers, consultants, and small business owners in India are required to issue GST invoices for any taxable supply above ₹200 if the buyer requests one. For B2B transactions, a proper tax invoice is essential for the buyer to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC).
CGST, SGST, and IGST — when does each apply?
CGST + SGST
Applied when the seller and buyer are in the same state. CGST goes to the central government, SGST to the state government. Each is half the total GST rate — so an 18% GST rate means 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
IGST
Applied when the seller and buyer are in different states (inter-state supply) or for exports. IGST is the full GST rate charged as a single tax. This tool automatically switches to IGST when seller and buyer states differ.
GST rates
Most goods and services fall under 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% GST. Exempt items have 0% GST. Professional services like consulting typically attract 18% GST.
